PITH 2020!
Re: PITH 2020!
I’m in, but I’m not in favor of George’s suggestion, it’s too easy.

Re: PITH 2020!
Read the first post in this thread for criteria to participate in the pith and take a look at the 2019 pith thread to get familiar on how it works. We will put a poll up around mid February to choose a shape. Right now we are throwing out ideas for a shape or theme.

Re: PITH 2020!
For shape suggstions, I would submit either a Bulldog / Rhodesian, or the classic Billiard. I think the newer of us can learn the most from these two options.
I hope to be at least half the person my dogs thinks I am.

I think it might be a good idea to see the composition of the participants before selecting a theme. If there are more newbies a classic theme seems like a good way to go ie billiard, bulldog, apple. If there are enough pros/semi pros we might want to pick something more interesting. Anyone remember the fruit and vegetable themed year?

Agreed. Maybe Premal can set up a poll once we have a lot of participants asking Newb/ not newb?Ocelot55 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2020 1:49 pm I think it might be a good idea to see the composition of the participants before selecting a theme. Re: PITH 2020!
The PITH is primarily intended as a learning exercise, you say?
How about Premal posts a Master Blueprint and everyone takes their best swing at nailing it.
I guarantee more people would learn more stuff in less time than doing it any other way.

A couple of more possible themes: Prince and dealer's choice except it must have a military stem mount.

Re: PITH 2020!
Here are the ideas put forth so far:
Bulldog
Billiard
Dublin
Pictures LatakiaLover posts
Zulu
Horn
Creature
Rhodesian
Blueprint shape
Prince
Military Mount
Some of the above have already been done on past piths. Can someone point out which ones? I think military was a few years ago. Its up to the participants to include the past ones or not in the poll.

Re: PITH 2020!
As a new pipe maker I'm game for whatever the group wants to do. But, there could be certain limitations for new carvers who do not have a lathe. For instance the two engraved rings on the bowl of a bulldog. I'm not sure how to do that without a lathe. But maybe that will just make us explore alternate techniques. Other than that type of consideration I'm okay with anything on the list so far....except LL's glass dragon.
Re: PITH 2020!
I am in that boat too. However, I am toying with different ideas to create a jig that would seat in the bowl and allow me to cut such a ring symmetrically. If I come up with something that works I'll share the idea.n80 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2020 6:03 pm As a new pipe maker I'm game for whatever the group wants to do.
