2 new pipes

Post by Bear »

Finally had some time to sit and work on some pipes. Finished these the other day. The churchwarden is made form black walnut that i had lying around for a long time. These are the 9th and 10th pipes I've made. I think at this point while I still have lightyears to go I am getting more comfortable with the process. Please let me know what you think positive or better yet negative. Thanks

Those are looking pretty good, Bear.

The only thing I can say for sure is that the freehand would look a little more "pro" if you took just a bit more material from the top of the shank, near the bowl. To my eye, it's a bit heavy there right now, given that the rest of the pipe is kind of lithe and lean. That would also mitigate the other issue I see with that pipe, which is that the stem is heading into the shank at a slight downward angle (angle of stem vs angle of shank) and I think it would be eased if the shank was "corrected".

But a very nice freehand - much more delicate than many and nicely grained.

Other than Sasquatch's issue, I see nothing you could do to improve either one.

I'd say if you're going to use pre-formed stems, you should remove the mold (parting) lines (the second pipe).
