pipe in the hat trade?
Re: pipe in the hat trade?
I like it. It's just edgy enough not to be traditional. I'll save the critiquing for the new owner. I'm sure it will make one of the participants very happy.
Re: pipe in the hat trade?
Whoa! Killer grain and stain on that baby! I'll just mention the one thing that jumps out at me. In the top photo it looks like there's a bulge in the stem where it meets the shank. If that's a trick of the eye, then I've got nothin'. That is all.Vermont Freehand wrote:Well, here's my entry.
5 1/2" long, just under 2" wide.
5/8" thick Mauve ebonite stem 2 5/16" long plus delrin tenon.
3/4" bowl hole, 1 1/8" deep.
I think it would look better with a saddle stem, but I'll let this pipe go as is. Lots of room to critique, I welcome any and all comments.

Re: pipe in the hat trade?
So when do we get this party started? I'd like to send off my entry to whatever poor sap gets it as soon as possible.

I'll have pictures of my entry posted tomorrow. I finished up last week, but just got pictures done today, and now I'm at work...yay.

Re: pipe in the hat trade?
The mauve ebonite came to me as a sample from a German ebonite manufacter (only piece I have of this color). Pretty cool color, looks darker in person since the photos were taken outside on a bright day.
Re: pipe in the hat trade?
I wasn't very happy with the first pipe i posted for the trade, so i tried again. Just finished it up this morning. This one is briar and ebonite. I think this one turned out a bit better than the first. I would like to offer it as an alternative. Your thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Re: pipe in the hat trade?
looks good, Aaron. Speaking only for myself, I think that's a better looking pipe, and it's made out of briar too! I think you should enter that one.
Re: pipe in the hat trade?
Here's my PITH pipe. It's my first bulldog, well, technically my second since the first try didn't work out as well as I liked. I'm trying to practice some classic shapes, so I went with the traditional paneled bulldog with some slight variations here and there. The rim is smooth...I didn't get a good picture of that. Unfortunately, the draft hole is a little off center at the bottom of the chamber...I'm having problems with that lately and I'm working on getting it sorted out with some different techniques. I hope that whoever gets my name likes nose warmers as this thing is a whopping 3 5/8 inches long. I don't think it feels as small as it is and it has a decent bowl capacity. Your thoughts and critiques are appreciated, as always.

Baby is due in 6 weeks and got a whole lotta honey do and full time school goin on right now...I shouldn't be on there for obvious reasons, but these are primary...lol! If I can do one this doesn't preclude me right? But for listing purposes...no...I respectfully bow out...can't wait to see the results though!
Re: pipe in the hat trade?
I can't make it either, studies has been a pain in the ass lately, but then again I'm not sure I ever even entered.... I have done a drawing on a block though, but that's about as far as I got...=)

I want to have this one, please.mredmond wrote:
As the list of competitors is getting shorter an shorter it should be easy for you, Kurt, to "modify" the list in a way that brings Micah right on top of me.
Thank you.

Damn... I totally missed this, I really wanted to do this too!
Re: pipe in the hat trade?
So, we send the pipe to the carver below us on the list? It's my first PITH, so just wanting to double check.

I believe we need to wait for Kurt to randomize the list and post the official order.

Too bad, I wouldn't mind having one of your pipes, Andrew.

Thanks, Walle! I very much appreciate the compliment.
Kurt always goes incommunicado on PITH selection day. I think something diabolical is probably at work.
