Jet vs Grizzly?
Jet vs Grizzly?
My company gets a lot of our wood working tools from Grizzly, but most people here seem to talk about the Jet metal lathes. The Grizzly metal lathes are much cheaper, are they just not good enough?

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
I love me some brand names, just as much as the next American...
but when it came time for me to get a metal lathe, I could only afford a cheap Chinese model from Harbor Freight.
It worked just fine, did a great job... never any problems...

Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
I don't know about Jet Vs. Grizzly, but I will say that the Jet BD 920 lathes can go on some great sales. If you keep an eye out on Amazon and Enco you can get them much cheaper, if you're patient. I picked mine up for $1,399 with free shipping. I know Tyler and Ernie got a pretty good deal on theirs as well.
Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
I just picked up a used Jet bd920n for 600. It's a little dirty, and had one broken handle. Other than that, it's good to go. I posted pics of it.
Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
yeah, I saw that, I will keep looking. I am just trying to plan my expenditures. I have a little under zero disposable income

Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
For our line of work, Chinese lathes are just fine. They should last forever (well, probably the electrics won't.)
Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
the Chinese will do, but they're ugly
I just LOVE the look on the old school American and European lathes (logan, atlas, myford,...) and I'm quite sure you can get one second hand for less than a same capacity chinese. I paid €400 for my 1962 original MyFord Super 7. They made the exact same model up to 2011 (and rumour has it they'll start up again in 2013) for €8.000+!
Ok, some of the hinges on the covers are broken, some setscrews are missing, but the bed is in perfect shape and all bearings run true and more importantly: spares are relatively easy to come by!

Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
How have the other Grizzly tools help up and how do they compare to other brands your company uses? Sure would be nice to have a shiny, new, green 10x22 in the shop! Why would the 9x19 come with a 7 1/4" chuck and the 10x22 come with a 6 1/2" chuck?the rev wrote:My company gets a lot of our wood working tools from Grizzly, but most people here seem to talk about the Jet metal lathes. Re: Jet vs Grizzly?
well our Grizzly cabinet saw is awesome, not a trouble at all.
Our Grizzly Drill Press has not seen that much use.
I thought we bought our band saw from them too, but that is a Rikon
Our planers work great too
