Its professional grade termites. They're smarter than regular termites, so you can train them where to go

I have actually thought about termites as a way of making curved holes...

Curved holes...ohh curved holes... how can I drill you?

This time around, I shaped the stem rough, then, using a jewelers saw with a tiny kerf, I cut the stem in half, tracing a dark band in the wood so that the glue line would be hidden in the pattern of the grain. I then drilled the holes from both directions in both curved halves, 4 different hole angles to drill. And then I drilled a larger mortise hole in the two halves so that they could be connected again with a bamboo tenon on the inside. This was a tough hole to drill, because the hole had to go into the two halves of wood at different angles, if it was off just a tiny bit, the two pieces would never fit back together perfectly, and the effect would be ruined.

It turned out pretty good, but my eventual goal is to just figure out how to bore a hole in a solid piece of wood with multiple curves in it... it must be possible...somehow...

Saw this thread a while ago. The problem with the steam bent method is that it's really hard to get complex double bends, or a small radius. Also you are somewhat limited to using species that bend well, which...tend to be rather boring in my opinion.

I've looked at the patents for the curved hole boring machine, and it seems viable, but only for a single curve in a stem. I'm more interested in double bends.

Could you elaborate?

I was under the impression that cocobolo has excellent dimensional stability. Which is why it is used often in making knife handles, etc...
