Payment at shows

Post by oklahoma red »

For those out there that regularly attend the various shows and sell your pipes how do you handle receiving payment for a sale, other than cash?

I've used Square quite a bit while helping my wife at arts & crafts shows (she's a potter) and find it's easy for the retailer and customer to use and their fees aren't exorbitant. It's nice that it works with smart phones, so you don't need a lot of extra equipment. PayPal has a similar card reader, as well, but I haven't used it.

When you say PayPal would I be correct you are referring to their service that uses the little card reader plugged into a smart phone or Ipad, all similar to the Square system?
As I understand it, the readers will allow acceptance of various credit/debit cards thru your PayPal or Square account.
Am I also correct that if your customer has a PayPal account the reader is not necessary and the transaction is handled thru the normal PayPal app for smart phones?
Do the facilities that house the various shows usually have Wi-Fi in the show area or do you have to rely on whatever phone signal you can get?
Does PayPal stand out over cash or credit card sales?
Thanks for the input.

I've used Square successfully at several pipe shows. It will use Wifi if the signal is strong enough which a lot of the time it is not. Otherwise it will use your phone signal. I've never had a problem not getting reception at Chicago, St. Louis, or Columbus.

I have the PayPal Here card reader and love it. You just download their app and away you go. They will send you a reader for free and the fees aren't bad at all (they are a little higher if you manually enter the card versus swiping it). If the person has a paypal account I would think it would be easier for them to send the payment to you while they are standing there.

Scottie, are you using an Iphone, Ipad or Android phone?

I've never heard of this PayPal reader thing before, but surely if you're paying stranger using this method it poses a huge security risk?
Would a customer have to use their log in details on your PayPal device?

Chas- I have the Samsung S4, but the PayPal app is available for all devices and the reader is compatable with all (was told this when I called them).

Brent- using the card reader is no different than swiping your card at the store. The card reader plugs into your phone through the headphone jack and you swipe the card like you would with any other card reader. The card info is as secure as things of that nature can be. And besides you aren't responsible for fraudulent credit card charges if someone does steal your card info (in the US, anyway). You (the customer) don't give any more information other than swiping the card and signing your name.

Anyone with a smart phone, which is to say, everyone everywhere, can log in to paypal, make a payment to me, which I can verify by logging into my own paypal account. That's all it takes.

Pipe shows are very cash-heavy. Partly out of strong tradition, and partly because most show attendees are in their 50's or 60's and get along fine without newfangled widgetry.

That's changing with the Rise of the Whippersnapper Carvers and increasing popularity of pipes with the college set, but it will be a good while before being able to process "e-business" on site is truly necessary, I think.

I prefer cash or credit card through Square. The Square system is really easy to use and the fees are lower than PayPal.

While I think having a way to process a digital payment isn't absolutely crucial and is entirely up to the individual, I have spoken to a pipe maker or two who have had a customer walk away at a pipe show because they didn't have cash and the maker couldn't take a card.

If I could get a free chip and pin like Scottie then I would have one just because why not? If someone came up to me at a show and wanted to pay by card then I could handle it. So far I have not needed it and the outlay is just too much for a "maybe one day" kind of thing, I'll see how things go at this years BPSC, if I lose a pipe sale because of it then maybe I will invest. That being said though a friend and tobacconist will be there and I bet he will have a card machine, in exchange for covering his fee and a pint I bet he would handle it for me, in fact I'm going to send him an email now :D

You don't know how much he likes beer, haha.

It's worth an ask anyway and better than spending £99 on something I might use once or twice a year.
