Re: 2013 Pipe In The Hat Trade
I've been extra busy the last couple times this PITH game was played. I've been the same this year, but I have more notice this time.
Sooooo.............. Count me in!
I saw someone mention shank extensions to lengthen the shank. If I'm stepping on toes just tell me. I think a shank extension is a good exercise, especially for those that haven't done one before. I have done a couple and it can be good for a newer maker to learn perhaps. The correct wood can really compliment a pipe and if you want, you could go briar and it would hardly be noticeable when finished.
Just my thoughts as I enjoy making a very long shanked pipe every once in a while.

I think shank extensions are fine....whatever you have to do to get to the length requirement. It's all good practice. Just make sure it's on the shank and not the stem.
Got both you boys added to the list.

Re: 2013 Pipe In The Hat Trade
Just to be clear, does it have to have long shank or just "as long as possible from the block/chosen design"? Or are we talking canadian-"fruits"??
I have a pretty good idea, but just want to be sure if its OK by the definitions of the PITH.

I just understand it as something fruity... parsnip fondling will occur in the next hour or two.. shank length is up to the carver.. scottie?

Re: 2013 Pipe In The Hat Trade
You got it Chas. We are shooting for the shank being at least twice the height of the bowl.
I know some of us are going to be limited by the blocks we have on hand and won't be able to afford to get another one. Soooo.....in order to make it where we all can play, Shank extensions are allowed. Just make sure they are on the shank and not on the stem...No cheating!!
Just try to make the briar shank as long as you can (given your block) and then add until you hit where (or close to) you need to be. I'll throw in a "give or take" on the lenght, because I know men are really bad at measuring things accurately
(I've been waiting to say that with the "long shank" thing we have going
come on.....it was funny, right??)

Re: 2013 Pipe In The Hat Trade
So I think I'll go ahead and add my name to the list. The last couple times I had to withdraw due to being deployed, so I'd really like to see it through this time, as long as deployments don't get in the way. So here goes: I'm in!

Unless you are planning on starting your own country methinks you should avoid long shanks at all cost.(I've been waiting to say that with the "long shank" thing we have goingcome on.....it was funny, right??)

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I'd like to be included too.
One question though, does an egg shape count or should we stick to parsnips and such?

Hhhmmmm...good question.
I guess you could find eggs at a farmer's market. You could make an egg and call it an avocado. They are about the same shape.
I've got you down and will add you to the list now.

length.. bamboo? as if so I have my idea already bouncing around in my head.. if not I'll be readjusting a little.. but bamboo is good...

The deadline is firm at Sept. 30th. The Great and Poweful Mama has spoken (insert thunder and lightening effects here).....pay NO attention to the fat lady behind the curtain!!!! And nope, I'm not fat (in the spirit of the PITH) I'm hiding a watermelon under my shirt!!!
