Deadline: SEPTEMBER 30TH.

Shape: FARMER'S MARKET
Any Fruit, Vegetable or Nut you want to carve.
The shank length must be at least twice the bowl height (else I"ll come to your house and woop that hine leg!!........Yes, I'm a hillbilly princess )



If there are no objections to a woman driving this clown car, I'll throw myself under the proverbial bus and head this little tea party up.

Well, an August 31st date seems a little soon for me, but I'll toss my hat into the ring.

As far as the theme, the year before last was bulldogs. If everyone wants to do that, that's cool, but I vote for something with a long shank.

im gonna go with jesse and say its a little soon. I think Scotties got it with the end of September.
my vote for shape is gonna be less traditional and more interpretation.

I vote for 2 rules.
-has to be in the Danish style
-has to be long shanked

as ive been learning, all ive done is traditional shapes thus far and want to get frisky with something curvy.

Also, can someone explain a bit more what Danish style is? Just want to make sure I get it curvy enough.

No way am I going to saddle any experienced pipe maker here with one of my pipes yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing what everybody turns out. Maybe later on down the line I'll jump on board.

I like the idea of a long shank. But, I really don't want to get into making a Freehand. I've tried a couple and they are sitting on my bench unfinished.....probably will never finish them.

I think it makes it easier for everyone to play if we pick a shape that has defined "rules" to it.

So we can get as many people as possible on board let's set the official deadline for September 30th. I'll update the orignal post to reflect that and when we have the shape hammered down I'll adjust that as well.

And LW....everyone can play. The point is to get an honest critique from another maker and get the chance to get a pipe from a guy you normally wouldn't be able to. You're in....like it or not

Now the questions and suggestions will start to fly. Such as:
If you are going to go long, is that a long shank ala Canadian or long in the stem ala Churchwarden or a semi-Churchwarden/Tavern?
Perhaps the best way would be to say the pipe must be at least "X" inches long from the bowl/shank juncture to the button.
Just throwing it out there to gnaw on.

Unless shankside extensions count? In that case I might come up with something...

I also vote for the end of September. As far as the theme, my wife suggested fruit, which I thought would be interesting, and I would add "or vegetable." That leaves a lot of room for interpretation. For those who want structure, they could do something like an apple or tomato, and for carvers who want something more freehand, the sky is the limit. Carvers in-between could take a cutty and make a pepper, or a tomato and make it a peach, a horn into a banana and so on.
Just a thought.

I must say i like all the ideas so far! Vegetable theme would really leave the PITH open for interpretations, a lot of classics inspired from nature:-)

yeah fruit and veg themed pipe is a great idea. figs, strawberries, apples, tomato, pear, etc.. fantastic.
btw jthompson, when I said Danish style I meant more new Danish like former, sbang, gracik, TJ, benni jorgensen etc...
I don't mean ben wades or preben holm freehands like what some people think. curve long shanks look so graceful, but I guess I could always do a long shanked squash pipe.

This sounds good. Part of the purpose of the PITH is to make a shape you haven't before. Something technically challenging to your current skill levels. To push yourself a little further, learn and improve.

Okay, boys....I think we are on the home stretch (get it....stretch). Just in time for summer....It's the Farmer's Market PITH!!!!!!!

Pipe Shape: Any Fruit, Vegetable, or Nut you want to make. Stick with a classic, go freehand, make it a fantasy. The sky's the limit this time around. Let's add one more perameter and everyone make the shank of your pipe as long as your block will allow. As JT suggested, let's shoot for at least twice the height of the bowl. Someone get adventurous and put a 4" shank on a squashed tomato or something

I'll update the original post with the details if we are all in agreement.

Oh, and for the sake of my sanity....everyone who is for sure in (at this point) give me an I'm in and I'll start the list.
