PS --- I just noticed Pipedreamer actually started the factory thread on this board, not Todd. He commented later. Sorry.

I suspect this could all get a bit messy. Walt Cannoy posted a link to the thread here on his Facebook and one chap seemed to take umbridge in a similar fashion.
We all want to educate i'm sure, but the context is important. On here there is an assumption most people know roughly what makes a quality pipe, and by implication know that a lot of what is out there isn't that. The wider piping community unfortunately does not, by and large, ime.
Coming at this angle it can read less like 'here is how you can get better pipes and learn more about them' and more like 'you are an idiot for buying turds'. Now both may be perfectly true, but how many people like being called an idiot, and their beloved pipes turds? I think few would thank you for that feedback, much less be able to take it in any constructive way.

Agreed Oakbear.
I am a member of many, many FB pipe groups and other social media groups and many of the pipes being shown are, well, in Todd's words "turds" which are receiving "wows" and "Oh MYs!" as if they are the next incarnation of, well, take your pic of legendary pipe makers.
The audience is very, very different from the generalized membership on this forum.
Many clearly took what TJ was saying in the wrong way and became offended. Too bad.

I had no idea so many non-pipe makers were looking at our little forum, here. I realize that's how the internet works and I don't post much anyway, but that makes me a little uncomfortable. Maybe it's a good thing and I'm robably silly for thinking we are somewhat removed from the other forums, etc.

I'm with you. Makes me want to go back and read through all my post as I'm sure I mostly sound like an idiot.mredmond wrote:I had no idea so many non-pipe makers were looking at our little forum, here. I have lived for quite a while saying in public what I'm gonna say and when. I'm sure I offend people from time to time, but editing myself is just too hard. And about 99.9% of everything I say is my opinion anyway, so people can take it for what it's worth....which we all know isn't much.

Scottie, that's how we like it and I think the forum is better for it. I wouldn't suggest anybody edit themselves. It's just a funny feeling when the curtain is pulled back and you realize that your perception that no one is watching is incorrect and a probably a bit naive.
