Is there any way to paint a pipe?

Is there any way you could paint artwork on a stummel and it still be a functional pipe? I don't think I have ever seen it done.

Dunhill does it all the time.

They are totally smokable, but few ever are I'd imagine. (The work is done by famous artists)

I'd think that if you absolutely had to paint a pipe you would want to do a little research first into what kind of paint is heat resistant and non-toxic.

The problem with painted pipes is that they seal the briar making the pipe retain heat more easily.

Well I guess it's not really a "problem," just something the maker should be aware of.
