Re: Router bits

Thanks for the replies. I'm not looking for a shortcut, or anything. I was looking at a router bit in the hardware store and thought to myself, "That sure looks like a pipe bowl."

Router bits

Anyone ever try using a radius cutting router bit to carve out a tobacco chamber? I don't know if it is feasible, but it seems if you put one in a chuck on a tailstock it might work. The shanks on them are kind of short, though. Maybe it could be modified.

Re: Wood turning

Thank you Tyler, that was the kind of insight I was hoping for. Looking forward to others opinions as well. As a matter of fact I was in Harbor Freight the other day for some steel wool and felt. I looked around the whole store while I there and did not see any wood turning tools at all.

Wood turning

I don't have a ton of cash to spend, and I certainly can't afford to buy a set of nice turning tools. So, in your opinions, what is absolutely necessary in terms of turning tools to turn bowls on a lathe? How many different turning tools do you usually use to turn one bowl? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Sealing

What if you soak the bark in water? Wouldn't that soften it up to the point that you could get it off much easier with a brush?

Re: My first post

I put some photos up in another thread in the tools forum. Thanks for the welcome, though. I have yet to do a thing except work on the lathe getting everything cleaned up and ready to go.

Re: Pipe Clubs

I too attended my pipe clubs annual Christmas party last night. Really great spread of food, open bar, and lots of friends sharing tobacco. We are lucky in that alot of the wives of members are very involved and help out with preparations. Some of the wives are even members. Pipe club meetings are r...

Re: Dimmer Switch to Slow Down Sander

I'm sure the experts will chime in, but it seems to me that if you did that you would lose torque. Not quite the same as changing the gear ratio. That's just my initial impression, though.

Here's my new 67 year old lathe

This is the lathe that I just brought home. It is a Montgomery Ward/Logan metal lathe and the serial number indicates it was make in 1943. I am still in the process of cleaning it up, but it is fully functioning. I only need to replace the flat belt , as far as I know. The only other issue is that I...

My first post

Hello all, my name is Jeff. I have not made so much as a single pipe yet, but I am happy to have a resource such as this to be able to absorb knowledge from. I've smoked a pipe for about 18 years, and have always wanted to try my hand at making them. One barrier to that is getting together the requi...
