The other thread on learning basics reminded me of a story from my early days as an artist in training. I was in a beginning drawing class taught by a Chicago based painter named Joe Hronek. Joe was a professional painter who taught part time at a local community college. The atmosphere of this plac...

Jack, you will want to ask him if the knuckles are ground down. If you don't mind that then no problem. However, I know a guy who bought a bunch from here and while much of it is usable, it all had knuckles that were ground flush. It has something to do with making certain no foreign soil is contain...

Also, another critical tip for those usuing delrin and have trouble getting a snug fit.... Do not back out the drill while drilling the mortise. Do it in one motion and you will get a more accurate diameter. Really? I've found that backing out the bit and clearing the chips actually makes for a tig...

Hey John, Thanks for your thoughts. I see what you mean about the underbelly of the stem, I missed that. It is always nice to have someone with a good artistic eye to critique your work. I really appreciate that, I am honing my skills with every pipe. It is great to get this kind of feedback to hel...

I might suggest shaving a little bit off of the underbelly of the stem and making the bottom curve more like the top line. That would repeat the same sort of sweep you have in the shank (although f...

If you are using #2 profile or tower jaws you would simply insert this into your jaws and hold a pen blank in there without having to change jaws or put the blank between centers. It basically makes your oneway 4 jaw chuck (which is designed to hold round stock) able to hold small diameter square st...

I used a brad point bit for a long time and then switched to a jobber bit. I have found that Irwin bits are readily available and are an accurate diameter. I also don't worry about he cone at the bottom of the mortice. Most of my pipes have an airway with a slight uphill angle so I carve a slight ra...
