How do you stamp your pipe?

Post by scotties22 »

I finally got my stamp in the mail today!!! :D . Now I have to decide the safest (remember, I'm a blonde) way to use it. I really don't like the idea of swinging a hammer or mallet at the stamp....I'm notorious for missing and mashing fingers  Just curious to see how you fellas do it....uuuhhhhhh, stamp your pipes (get your minds out of the gutter!!)

I'm going to try to make this clear: USE HAND PRESSURE ONLY!!!

If you go swinging a mallet you're going to bust a shank. Even using a press can be tricky. Just be careful. I just roll the stamp with pretty firm pressure over the area I want stamped.

Something soft to rest the pipe on, I use a couple layers of chamois leather. Press the stamp firmly and roll across the surface of the pipe. If the stamp is large or the wood hard then warm up the stamp this will make it lot easier.

I'm using a hot-air gun (600 degree Celsius), heat the stamp and use it by hand:

Jesus..... I've been putting my stamp in a vise and swinging the pipe at it like an axe.

I snapped a quick pic of my stamping room for you Scottie.
Each of the presses is set up for one stamp; One for my signature, one for a date, one for grade, etc.

Each machine weighs 142,000 lbs, so the stamps come out very crisp.
Hope this helps,

I stamp my pipes differently depending on how they're shaped. Straight ones are easy, just put your stamp in your drill press, very controlled even pressure. Curved shanks are different, rolling a stamp is trickier.

I think Sas might be on to something with swinging the pipe at the stamp...

I do like Andrew. For straight stamping areas/shanks I made a jig like padded thing to support the pipe in my drill press vise and use my drill press. Seems I don't make many pipes that this works with so most of the time I brace the pipe in my hand and press firmly with a up and down motion from one end of the stamp to the other. For the record, I hate stamping.
