Re: workshop question
I have not noticed any effect on tools or briar, but it certainly effects the amount of time I spend in my workshop in the hot Texas summer. :) Seriously, though, higher humidity can lead to some rusting issues so watch out for that. Also, in the summer I find I have to go slower when drilling, and ...

Re: latest work
Do a search on here and you will find a lot of info on shank extensions. I personally think the joint should be reinforced by either: (1) making a tenon and mortise connection or (2) using a piece of delrin (although I am not sure that is the consensus opinion). I use no. 2, which provides the added...

Re: Making a new stem
Just to follow up, I had good results using some packing tape (thin cellophane I guess?). It proved very durable and came off easy. Masking tape for me at least was a little thick. Sanding down to the tape left still a good bit to go, so I switched to the packing tape. Still took some delicate work ...

I would appreciate an answer here also. I need to do a replacement stem, and have never tried that before. I was also thinking tape of some kind ...

Re: Lathe
My only tip is to pay the extra 100 or whatever to get a lathe with a speed-adjusting knob. I am getting a little tired of changing the belt all the time by hand. I, of course, saw that very same advice on here prior to my Jet purchase, and chose to ignore it.

Re: the future pipe smokers???
Personally, I think pipes should be considered much differently from other forms of smoking, and might actually be seen as a more healthy alternative. I, for example, have never smoked cigarettes and, although I smoke pipes regularly (and now also make and sell them), I still do not consider myself ...

Re: Spade bits Pimo or tim west?
My PIMO bits work just fine with no pilot hole. In fact, I found that a pilot hole led to unnecessary clattering around which was less than helpful.

I have never understood the point of those things. I have a pipe with one on there and it's just irritating. What am I missing?

How about 2% of sales. Let's see ... I have sold five or six this year at an average of about 100 ... so that's $12. Some of you guys may have some larger balances.
Re: Greetings
Welcome, and good luck. You will be astounded at the improvement that comes with time, and access to this website.

Great work, and nice pictures as well. I agree that the freehands really stand out. The first is my favorite of the group, and the second has an excellent contrast stain. Congrats.

Re: Bent Delrin?
There is a good chance that it is the gluing process and not the delrin itself. We recently had a discussion about that, and a suggestion from staffwalker solved this very issue for me. The name of the topic was "more recent efforts." Can't figure out how to link that at the moment since i...
Re: 10-14
Really cool. The bit and the little stopper looking thing at the bottom of the stem almost seem removable for cleaning. You might be able to patent some kind of new "system" pipe.

Re: Stem length?
For some reason even the pink seems a little long to me. How about another line where you measure the entire length of the stummel including shank and bowl and then take half of that for the stem, which would be a tad shorter than the pink. This should be an interesting thread ....

a couple of new ones
Here are a few new ones, "bambooapple" and "cowtownpoker." In the first, the transition between shank and bowl finally made sense to me after I read a comment in another thread about thinking of it as two pieces. Forgot to check the symmetry of the bamboo knuckles, but that part ...
