Forstner bit facing wavy?
I'm currently still limited to only my drill press, and using prefab stems. I've tinkered with this press to spin it true yeat again, the "wobble" is down into the .001 of an inch range, drilling nice tight mortises. Problem being, when I attempt to face a stem. I get everthing lined up, l...

Re: Stupid Fiebing's Bottles. . .
The mason jars idea sounds good. If it's leaking around the lid, teflon tape? It works for water, and it's kept my rusty vinegar from leaking for months now even when knocked over or dropped. It's hard to get a good seal on plastic bottles (from the injection molding point of view) because most manu...

Re: Drill press for motor setup?
One thing to consider when buying the cheaper second hand drill presses, is their condition. I got a seemingly good one at the jockey lot for $33, got it home and tried it out, spindle bearings all out of whack. Spent a week tinkering with getting it true, so it drills fine with twist drills, but th...

My rat hole, always a work in progress! This is a steel table with angle for legs & floor plate with 1/4" plate steel. Still haven't mounted my "grinder" yet, eventually gonna get the french wheel arbor for it. Use an adaptor arbor in the drill press for buffing. http://i733.photo...

I got my needle files on ebay, shipped from China or Japan, they ship to anywhere, and they're like $10 US, if I remember right.

Check out TJ's sticky "hand cut stems without a lathe" I think he describes in detail the process you're speaking of. It's in the stems section. Hope this helps

Re: Pipe Clubs
We sorta started our own bastardized illegitimate club, we all get together on Saturday night and try different tobaccos, pipes, etc and just general pipe discussion. Although I'm sure it lacks whatever the "big clubs" have going on, I'm happy with it. Always something new to try, and usua...

I *think* the point most people were getting at in this thread was about dismissing most of the advice or pointers given. That's just my take on it, could be wrong though. An off topic thought, have you gotten feedback from your first few pipes sold or traded? I've heard a few on here mention trade ...

Check out the sticky in the stems section by TJ on "handcut stems without a lathe"
Most of it will be irrelevant for you, but it notes the different size/style bits needed for a handcut stem and, elaborates on "cutting the slit"

I tried making one of those the other day, question; how do you keep the sandpaper from tearing? Cut it as wide as the holes are deep? That's the only thing I can think of.

Just my 2 cents worth here; but I've been looking through Rad's website for months now. And I've been impressed with the quality pipes he sells for a reasonable price considering that he's been pipe maker of the year. It speaks volumes for his character and respect for pipe smokers everywhere. That'...

Re: Best starting point for rough shaping
@ TJ; I actually started 2 stummels, 1 with a template, 1 with only a general idea. The template, screwed me all up, way too big and goofy looking. The one without the template, came along nicely. So I'll most likely still trim away the extreme excess by saw, but in a 3 dimensonal way like I started...

Thanks fellas! :) @ Tyler, no worries, I completely get the point of "just o it," that's been my employers training method for years now  It does work, and lessons learned tend to stick @ TimGeorge, I've looked at that band saw as an option, may go with one having a deeper cut in the ...
