Re: To turn or not

Most times, you will also need to expand the airhole.... And also they are way too wide behind the button and need to be thinned ... And be sure and sand down those molding marks .... On the whole, I have found that it is almost as easy to just go ahead and make your own. :)

Re: My "First"

I like it, a true piece of history. It should not be judged against a one-piece briar stummel like those we make here, but against the two-piece pipe of native wood that would have been hand-carved in the old days with minimal tools around a campfire or homestead. Good job! I myself plan to mess wit...

Re: More recent efforts

Wow, Bob, I used your method described above for the first time last night and I now understand how a stem is supposed to fit. There is a shank extension on the pipe, and you cannot even tell if it is on the stem or the shank at first glance. Thanks again! It was definitely the insert that was the p...

Hey, go for it if you can. You don't have to spend much. I am making do with a $99 refurbished band saw that does a fine job and sure beats hand sawing.

Re: zebrawood/purpleheart wood

I use zebrawood fairly often as a shank extension and do find it beautiful. The dust is irritating and pretty nasty smelling when cutting and shaping, though, so for no reason other than that I don't think I would make a bowl from it.

Re: Shank Extension Tenons and Sleeves and Such

You could use a peice of delrin to connect the extention to the stummel. You could create a 5/16" mortise 1/2" deep in 3/8" delrin 3/4" in length and then use a 5/16" delrin rod to create the tenon. Drill a hole clean through your .5" thick extention and a hole .25&quo...

Re: 10-10

I like the video idea, T3, although I am not sure how many people here will take the time to do that. I like the pipe also. From my untrained eye I would say you have made a lot of progress, maybe because you are on your 10th pipe this year. I am on about 4 thanks to work and other commitments. Abou...

Re: visiting a pipemakers shop...how to approach?

I edited the above post to delete info regarding the pipemaker in question. Should have thought that one through first.

On the plus side, I am planning to bid on one of his pipes .... Looks like they are usually a good deal.

I like the one in your avatar also. "Cobra," I think, from your website. Nice.

Welcome, Art. Sounds like you will be a real asset to those on here who also make knives, swords and assorted metal items. That's not me .. yet. I have enough hobbies and still have to make a living.

I just did this last night using T-88 epoxy, and have made three or four stems for bamboo pipes that way previously. Is the CA recommendation because of a better bond? requires less glue? Thanks, as always.

Ring Grain on a Smooth Pipe?

Another basic question. Is it desirable to end up with a smooth pipe showing ring grain, as in the picture below, or would that be a perfect blasting pipe (for those of you with the capability)? My first thought is that I must have done a pretty good job of polishing, but I only hear about straight ...

Re: How bad is this rookie mistake?

Thanks, everyone. Just to follow up, here is a picture of the pipe in question. In my rookie opinion, the off-center mortise looks fine in the oval shaped stem pictured above, but not really in a round one like this. Oh, well. Glad to have sparked an interesting discussion at least. http://i670.phot...

Thanks, Kurt. I feel better now. I'll post a picture when I get a chance to take one. Nick, too thin at this point to take more off. My attempt at drawing is not too great.

How bad is this rookie mistake?

On my latest pipe, which looks pretty good from the outside, I somehow ended up with a mortise in the shank which is not centered, and looks something like the below drawing with the stem removed: Doh! :banghead: Assuming it is otherwise fine, looks okay and smokes good, could you pass that off as a...

Re: Horn

Hey T3, the following link has a nice description of a horn, and I think your primary issue here is running afoul of the part about "no abrupt transitions." That's easy to fix, at least on future pipes. Keep at it!

Thanks for the extra pics, and excellent job. I have added it to the long list of designs I would like to take a crack at ... someday ... with a blasting cabinet.
